New biometric requirement for applications lodged in India

From 26 October 2026, the Australian Department of Home Affairs has expanded biometric collection — fingerprints and a facial image — to visa applications lodged in India. The requirement is triggered primarily by where the application is lodged, rather than strictly by nationality; selection remains case-by-case and notice-based.

Key points

Scope and exclusions
Applies to new visa applications lodged in India on or after 26 October 2026. Applications already lodged before 26 October 2026, and visas already granted, are not affected.
Notification-based selection
Not every applicant will be asked for biometrics. The Department will notify individuals directly, typically via email to the applicant or their authorised agent, if required, and provide instructions on how to comply.
Assigned collection pathway
Applicants notified will be directed to attend an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) in India, operated by VFS Global, or, where the notification indicates eligibility, use the Australian Immi App. The letter specifies which path applies; these are not options applicants can freely choose between.

This extends Australia's existing offshore biometrics framework to India, with the stated aim of strengthening identity verification and reducing fraud.

For employers and mobility teams

Plan for a possible additional step
Flag that a biometric step may be added after lodgement for employees or candidates applying from India. This is notification-driven, not something applicants need to pre-arrange.
Monitor official correspondence
Monitor the applicant’s email and authorised agent’s inbox for the official “Requirement to provide personal identifiers” letter. Do not act on biometrics until this letter is received.
Follow the assigned pathway
Check the letter for the assigned collection path. Where it indicates app eligibility, confirm the VLN and passport criteria in the letter before proceeding; do not assume app access without it.
Build a timeline buffer
Build a modest buffer into visa timelines for applications lodged from India, in case an in-person ABCC appointment is required.
